The theme this week is Peace on Earth Day. The challenge is to use<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;"> re-cycled, re-used, or up-cycled elements. I have had these fabric gift tags for many years, but never had a plan for using them.
The ornament is “hanging” on the card.
The prompt was to do something with “three”.
If successful, I will have my Christmas cards for 2020 completed by the first of December!

This week’s challenge was to use wrapping paper, tags, or some recycled item from Christmas. Here is my first card for this year. I cut the Three Wisemen from some wrapping paper I have.
This post will be some of the highlights!

Travel: We wanted to go out of state each month for a trip, and so far we are meeting that goal!

January - San Diego, CA for the American Farm Bureau Annual Convention
February - Outer Banks, NC because we had never been there and did not want crowds of summer
March - Nashville, TN to see sister Carol and Earl, Mia, Tom and Diane were there as well
April - Gifford Pinchot State Park, PA when we went camping with all the kids and Joe and Diane
May - Fenton, MO to visit Mom and Dad and family. We were there for their 65th wedding anniversary and Mother's Day this year.
June - Edgewater, NJ and Manhattan, NY to see Earl and Mia and my college roommate Gail
July - Gettysburg, PA for the Vintage Base Ball Festival with Joel, Katie, Becky, Joe and Diane
August - ??

Last week's baseball game was the Brandywine Base Ball club of West Chester, PA. These teams play by 1864 rules, including equipment, (no gloves, different bats, etc.), uniforms, game rules, umpires (called an arbiter), etc. Injuries to the hands are common!
I have a list of quilt/sewing projects that I want to make, and kitchen items are on there. I was able to start and finish two cardinal placemats this month, since I used them to practice machine quilting!

The second finish is my watercolor laptop quilt that will now be a tablecloth! It was started about ten years ago, and I knew I needed to do more machine quilting to ever get it done. While the top worked out well, the back is not ready for showing! I know this is one for me to keep, and it shows that I still need to do a lot more practicing on machine quilting. I do like it, however!!

It was a "cold day in July" that year! I am so blessed to have had these past 40 years with such a wonderful man - God truly did bring us together for life.

We typically have not given each other presents for anniversaries, birthdays, etc. This year we decided to do something special for us, however. We took off for a few days and did not leave the state! We headed to several places that we have been driving past, and always said "we need to stop there sometime". Knowing us, we do not easily stop when headed to a destination, so we made local places our destinations.

First stop was Agecroft Hall, in Richmond, VA. This is a reconstructed English Tudor house that was falling down over in England. In the late 1920s it was taken apart, pieces were salvaged, and put back together here in Richmond. While the entire house was not in good shape, Agecroft Hall shows the style and workmanship of old England.
The next day we went to Colonial Heights, VA, and the Keystone Tractor Museum. Wayne had seen this place from I-95 and so it was his pick! Except for being hot (no air conditioning in there), it was really a neat place. The number of tractors was overwhelming, plus cars and trucks on display. The owner has hundreds of restored tractors and trucks (he owned a trucking company). However, we did not find our International 706!
It is not because we have been bored, however. I will try to catch up in a future post, but today is celebrating not one, but two finishes for my quilting UFO challenge from Marti at 52 Quilts.

This first was not an UFO, but it is a completed quilting project. I found this pattern online and had to make it for my mother, whose first job was working at Singer Sewing Company in St. Louis, Missouri. Singer machines have always been special to us, much in the same way as International tractors are to others in my family.

I was also fortunate to deliver it in person, since we took a spring trip back to Missouri in May.

My second finish is this spring quilt, the fourth in a set of wall hangings depicting the four seasons. I did make my deadline - before the end of spring!!

I am not even going to try and go over the last 4 months! The things that I do remember include the following.

In September I had arthroscopic knee surgery. As soon as I recovered from that it was time for the Sprick Sibling reunion and we headed to Nashville, Tennessee. From there we were in St. Louis to visit my parents for a very short trip.

November brought home remodeling - we replaced all the carpet on the upper floor, which meant three bedrooms, the hallway, and the main steps. After preparing for the promised installation day, we learned that a guaranteed 72 hour installation is not guaranteed!! The carpet had to be ordered (not told to us at the store, and not mentioned on the label on the carpet sample which said "72 hour installation guaranteed"!

Then came December and all the holiday activities. In January we went to San Diego for the American Farm Bureau's annual convention.

Here are just a few photo highlights of the end of 2014.

This was one of our activities with the Sprick siblings.

During the carpet removal, we had all items out of the bedrooms upstairs - they wound up downstairs or in the bathrooms - where ever I could put stuff!!

Our December fun included taking our grandchildren on a tour of the Christmas lights in our area. We always like to see these tractors lit up, with the first one taking the role of Rudolph!
Then we were able to go to the Tuba Christmas concert at the shopping mall. Last year it was cancelled due to bad weather. It was really a great experience, made more enjoyable since we shared it with friends who are musical! He is a past high school band director and taught us about the tuba instrument family.
I have had these preprinted Advent calendar panels for at least 5 years. A few years ago I made several of the cookie bowl calendar for our granddaughter, Emma. Eli was not born at that time! Savannah and Hannah also got calendars for their families.

I did not even know about the green and red panel (and I made two of them) until I was preparing my UFOs last January! Now I have gifts to spare when the need comes up!
It is not the most positive situation there, so I want to showcase a happier view of my birth city. (There are MANY photos.)

We went back to visit family and to go to a tractor pull at the Washington Town and Country Fair. Wayne had been on the fair board for many years before we moved to Virginia, so it was nostalgic to visit together. (When we were there I was a "fair widow" as my brother-in-law said. We did not see Dad from days before the fair until the day after the fair ended.) His view of the fair was very different than the view that the kids and I have.
Well, this is also the 250th anniversary of the founding of St. Louis and there are 251 birthday cakes placed throughout the metropolitan area. I was hoping to see ten of the cakes, but only got to eight so far. (Maybe we should plan a trip in the fall to find more!)
Now that we are back home, for a little bit, it is time to get back to quilting, reading, my new Cricut Explore, and writing up my picture of the day album. I am only 6 weeks behind in that!! Photos are printed, but the journaling cards are all empty.

With all the traveling we did in July, I did not spend much time at the sewing machine. One advancement I made was in machine quilting. For the first time I am finishing a quilt with machine quilting instead of hand quilting! I will show the picture when I finish the border which IS being hand quilted.

I plan to have it done for my August UFO entry, since I made the quilt top many years ago. I realized that if it was going to be done this year, I needed to start learning how to machine quilt. I am not really satisfied with how it turned out, but it was a good top to practice on. I hope the next top will be easier to work on - and I remember what I learned on this one.

This small quilt was made for the grandson of my college roommate. It is my "go to" pattern now when I need something completed quickly - like before the one year old boy turns ten!! I think I counted 12 made so far.

It is another "quilt as you go" by Debbie Mumm, from her book - Debbie Mumm's Project Kids, c1999, revised 2001. ISBN: 0-9707811-4-8 I checked and there are copies available on Amazon from $0.01 and up!!

I was able to send this one to 52 Quilts and the monthly UFO projects, although technically it was not a UFO.

I need to write one more post to share my newest toy and another reason I am behind on my quilting. I also got the new Cricut Explore machine this month. I had it sitting in the box for three days before I had enough time to even take it out!!!

Wayne retired officially on June 27th and the "computer left the building"! Since then we have been through Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, and New York in two separate trips.

We went to Ohio for the wedding of our niece, stopping by Paul's house on the way up and the way back. They were married on July 12, which was also our 39th wedding anniversary.

It was a quick weekend, but we did get to see all my siblings and parents there. Plus our grandchildren and three of our childen (and spouse) were there. Our other son was in New Jersey at the wedding of his wife's sister the same weekend.
As I look back on the first half of the year, I have finished 2-3 UFOs, but also made 3 lap quilts from the start. I quess I have accomplished something!

This one is a true UFO and part of a series of quilts of the seasons. It is for winter and I still have the spring one to quilt by hand. The summer one is hanging up now, and the fall one was the first one completed. It is from a quilting book by Better Homes and Gardens.

I am most excited about this one - I saw it on a Facebook page called 24 Blocks and fell in love. The creator there was good enough to include the source of the pattern. I checked on Amazon and found a used copy of the out of print book! :-) The small quilts on the clothesline are already completely finished. Just the quilting to do, of course!
As a retired elementary school librarian, I love children's stories.

If anyone has found the post from Jingle Belles, thank you! I appreciate your time in looking here. Please feel free to leave a comment of sign up as a follower.

A few years ago I saw a suggestion on Pinterest to wrap up 25 holiday picture books and open one each day during Advent. I no longer have small children who would enjoy opening the "gifts" each day, but I missed reading the many holiday stories at school. SOooooo, I do this each year for me! I gather 25 (or more) books and put them in a basket by the tree. Each day or so I read one of them, taking my time with the illustrations and remembering why I bought it in the first place. Everyone of these books is special to our family and I look forward to sharing the stories with our next generation.

The Wild Christmas Reindeer, by Jan Brett, has been a favorite for many years. I love her colorful illustrations. The borders help move the story along and are not simply decorative. I have heard Jan Brett speak several times, and she said that there are so many ideas for a story that do not fit in the appropriate number of pages for a picture book. Using borders, she is able to write a longer story that still fit the picture book format.

I made this card 4" x 9", to fit a long envelope. I used my Cricut Expression and the "A Quilted Christmas" cartridge for the reindeer and Teeka. The book is a Spellbinders Nestabilities-Labels Seven.

The possibilites are amazing and I already have a card for another popular book ready.Irenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767087975669390876noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3462998733472389560.post-11579693726709947122014-06-19T09:52:00.002-07:002014-06-19T09:52:33.019-07:00Catcing up on Christmas cardsI was so exicited to make another Christmas card for the Jingle Belles group. Earlier this year they asked for theme suggestions and I mentioned children's Christmas stories. They liked it! This will be the theme on June 20th.

I am still behind on my Christmas cards and quilting UFOs, but we have been busy! It is great to spend weekends with family, we were able to take care of our grandchildren for three days, and activities just seem to go on and on and on!

I have always enjoyed "Christmas in July" and this year it may start in June - temperatures were in the upper 90s today. I will put on some of those snow songs, make some snowmen cards and try to keep cool.

I realized that I have made more cards than those posted here. Usually I am a few days past the deadline, so I moved on to the next theme.

Here are a few that I got completed for the various challenges:

I usually use cuts from my Cricut Expression on the cards, although some simply have decorative papers and stamping. In the last photo there are two cards made with vintage post cards for the recycling challenge.

I have had two successful cataract surgeries and look forward to June when I hope to be finished with doctor checkups for them. It is amazing to see when I am lying in bed in the morning.)

I have also been able to get back making cards - I managed to make one for Mother's Day, a birthday card, and one more for the Jingle Belles challenge, shown here.
**Wednesday, Day 37, I was preparing for my first cataract surgery the next day. Praise God that physicians have the knowledge to do operations like this. I am looking forward to greatly improved eyesight in the coming days.
**Thursday, Day 38, I had the surgery and found that it was best for me to take it easy and not try to use my eye too much. No Maunday Thursday service this year. We did remember that special meal that Jesus shared with his disciples and were glad to celebrate it on Easter morning at church.
**Friday, Day 39, I had a checkup with the doctor and my reading vision was not as he expected it to be. I will wait for time and continued healing. Distance was excellent though. I did make it to the Good Friday Tennebrae service at church that night.
**Saturday, Day 40, we went to see all our kids and grandchildren at the Cardinals/Nationals baseball game in Washington, DC. It was so good to see everyone having a good time and the Cardinals won!

I think the Bible verse I had chosen for Day 40 may tie up these final thoughts and is for the word relent:
"For their sake he remembered his covenant, and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love." Psalm 106:45

How comforting it is that even though I was not able to complete the challenge I tried this Lenten season, God relents and forgives us. How comforting is the abundance of his steadfast love, which never wavers or forgets us.
Yeah!! This is another card using recycled materials and I have had the ribbon with the tree on it for many years. I never remember to use ribbon on packages so it works very well as the center piece for cards. The actual card is left over from Christmas cards I made two years ago too.
We are to use throw away items, in honor of Earth Day this month - recyle! My first card here uses an old Christmas card that was 3-D. It stood up, but I have taken the snowmen and scattered them on this stair step card. I also have more snowmen to make another card.

I also used an old decorative scissors to cut the tag. I often think about throwing those away, but they do come in handy from time to time.Irenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767087975669390876noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3462998733472389560.post-44951735633567850712014-04-15T08:56:00.003-07:002014-04-15T08:56:27.403-07:00Lenten Photo Challenge Day 36 - Crowd

Crowds can be exciting or overwhelming. Five years ago we had a family reunion with about 85 immediate family members present. These are the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren (with spouses and fiancees) of Emil and Helen Sprick. It was an amazing time, visiting with some family that we had never met!

Do you believe in "mob mentality"? Sometimes people in a group or crowd find themselves doing things that they would never consider doing when alone. This kind of group would not give the same happy feelings shown in the photo above.

Crowds gathered around Jesus throughout his ministry: Matthew 14:19-21, with the feeding of the five thousand; Matthew 15:30-31, when he healed the lame, blind, crippled, and mute; Matthew 21:9-11, when he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. These groups saw his power and love for people. However, the same people may have been in the crowds described in Matthew 27:17-23, when Pilate asked "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is alled Christ?"

I also have found myself caught up in crowd mentality - when a group makes plans for a Sunday morning outing, when friends want to see a movie that I personally would never go see on my own. It is a constant struggle to stay in God's word and do his will. May each day grant me the strength to what God has planned.

Ephesians 3:14-19 - "for this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may granat you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith -- that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."Irenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767087975669390876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3462998733472389560.post-55685069735511977732014-04-14T17:55:00.005-07:002014-04-15T08:57:01.258-07:00Lenten Photo Challenge Day 33 - Weep, Day 34 - Tomb, Day 35 - HumbleWe were out of town the past three days. Previously I had noticed that many of the words this season seem to follow and connect with each other. I found a connection to these three days and so I have made one entry with three parts:

Weep -
If I fall down and scrap my leg, I probably start crying because of physical pain. The crying actually can help relieve the pain because I focus on something else.

Weeping is the same physical activity of shedding tears, but more intensely felt. This is the kind of crying that leaves a person drained. I think of weeping in relation to emotional pain rather than physical pain.

Lazarus had died when Jesus was was summoned to Mary and Martha. John 11:35 says "Jesus wept." He must have had deep emotions at the time.

Recently, our 13 year old yellow Lab passed away. Our family cried and wept and tears still come from time to time. These feelings are real, but nothing compared to the feelings Jesus had toward the end of his time on earth. They cannot be compared to the feelings we will experience again on Good Friday when the full impact of what Jesus did for us sinners hits home with us again. Then the world will weep.

Tomb -
When Jesus wept (above), it was because a friend had died. However, Jesus went to the tomb and commanded the man to come out - and he did. That tomb was now empty!

The same thing happened when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to the tomb of Jesus after he had died. Matthew 28:8 - "So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples."
The angel had told them that the tomb was empty - Jesus had risen as he had said he would. The tomb could not contain him.

Humble -
When I saw the word "humble" for Day 35, I imediately thought of Wilbur, from Charlotte's Web. Wilbur was the pig that Charlotte, the spider, described as humble and that word, along with others, saved Wilbur from the usual end of pigs.

Jesus, who was God in human form is described in Philippians 2:8 - "And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross."

Because he did not escape death, we do! May we continue to follow the advice Matthew gives to us in chapter 23:12 - "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."Irenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767087975669390876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3462998733472389560.post-38359153837904085722014-04-11T03:59:00.002-07:002014-04-11T03:59:21.991-07:00Lenten Photo Challenge Day 32 - AsleepI find it interesting how the words I have used this Lenten season all connect to each other. Day 31 was daylight and I referred to sleeping. Now today I see the word is asleep. Can I use yesteday's post again? Not this time.

I looked at I Thessalonians 4:13-14 - "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.

I see why "asleep" has a special meaning during the Lenten season. We typically think of "asleep" as a temporary condition and "death" as a permanent condition. In the verse above I see that death is also a temporary condition for those who belive that Jesus died and rose again.

We attended the funeral service for a friend who was a member of the church we joined when we moved to Fredericksburg in 1987. She was one of those friendly, welcoming "church ladies". She lived her faith. We have a small plaque that her husband made for many of us years and years ago that simply says "Jesus". It is made from broken popsicle sticks. At first glance it may be hard to make out the word, but once it is seen, the word always shows then.

God's love is like that - once we find it, we will see it all the time.
